Why SOFC technology is the future?
Fuel cells in particular have the potential to reshape how the world is powered, allowing efficient, clean, and reliable off grid energy generation. They can help us sharply reduce our use of polluting fuels, moving from coal to cleaner fuel sources, and eventually to renewably generated hydrogen. This could dramatically reduce the world’s fossil fuel use and associated emissions. The implications are huge for power distribution, for energy bills, and most importantly for the environment.
SOFCs are already finding wide ranging applications: delivering environmental and economic benefits within transport, industrial equipment, cooling, power, disaster relief and similar applications where grid power is not available.
SOFC Market Potential
The fuel cell market has huge potential. Statistics MRC estimate the overall fuel cell market to be worth around €23bn in 2024/258 (Fuel Cell Market Size – Industry Forecast Report, 2014 (2016), published by Global Market Insight Inc) with SOFC market valued at $2.6 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $4.9 billion by 2022. Global Market Insights put the market at $25.5 billion and SOFCs at $3 billion by 2024 (https://www.gminsights.com/industry-analysis/fuel-cell-market). These are promising numbers, which suggest an industry on the verge of a commercial breakthrough.
In theory it is largely possible that SOFC systems can produce electricity and heat in our homes and commercially. Although for the time being, due to high operating temperatures, fuel cell technology ceases to be cost efficient. The high cost of SOFC technology limits adoption to subsidised applications, or where the need for reliable clean power trumps cost drivers. But the potential is there. In order to achieve the holy trinity of unit cost, efficiency, and durability, the challenge that now remains is to bring down the high costs by lowering the operating temperatures of the SOFC systems down to 700°C.
Innovative designs that allow the decrease in operating temperatures will most definitely improve costs, efficiency and durability. At h2e, it is our mission to create systems that are commercially viable without subsidies. We aim to create SOFC systems that are profitable for manufacturers and deliver a ROI for consumer and businesses.
